Wildlife in South Dakota

Black Hills area is one of the four primary physio-geographical regions in the state of South Dakota in then United States of America. It is home to major national parks and world famous Homestake Gold Mine. Wind Cave National Park and Badlands National Park are the two major national parks in South Dakota. Mount Rushmore area is encapsulated by many public lands like the Black Hills National Forest, Wind Cave National Park, Black Elk Wilderness and Custer State Park.


Rugged rock formations, canyons, lakes and open yards of grasslands that typify Black Hills make it a favorite playground of the varied wildlife in South Dakota.



The rough and eroded semi-arid grasslands of Badlands National Park is the habitat of large herds of bison. Black Hills National Forest is colorful and vibrant home to many species of birds and four-legged animals that include elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats and monarch butterfly. Buffalo and mules are to be found in Custer National Park. This park was named after Armstrong Custer, a reputed Indian fighter and a buffalo hunter. Freely roaming herds of bison are seen in this park similar to that of Black Hills national Forest. Custer State Park has endless wildlife variety; black-tailed and white tailed deer live in harmony with pronghorn antelope, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep and coyote- South Dakota’s state animal. Bird variety includes red crossbills, mountain bluebirds, prairie falcons, wild turkeys and the majestic golden eagles. Jack rabbit and ring-necked pheasant population is witnessed in South Dakotan jungles and forests. Beavers, foxes, musk-rats, bob cats, skunks, raccoons, opossums are also found in great numbers. Rattle snakes is largely found in the western part of the state. The lakes of South Dakota are abundant with Chin Cook Salmon and rainbow Trout.

Spruce, pine, golden aspen and birch vegetation provide the perfect setup to the wildlife in South Dakota forests and national parks. The wildlife in South Dakota provides ample scope for outdoor recreation like hunting, fishing and gaming.
